Introducing Your New ALDA Chicago Board Members

05 Feb 2018 11:19 AM | Anonymous member (Administrator)

As you know, ALDA Chicago recently held its annual election to fill three open seats on the organization's Board of Directors.  Linda Belice, Michelle Donnelly and Marsha Swetin were elected to serve a two-year term (2018-2019).  Today, we are pleased to announce the results of the 2018 election of Board officers which was conducted at the first Board meeting of the year this past Saturday, February 3rd.  Your new Board of Directors for 2018 is:

Marsha Swetin, President

Joe Linder, Vice President

Linda Belice, Treasurer

Karen Krull, Secretary

Michelle Donnelly, Trustee

Debra Flowers, Trustee

Tom Garvey, Trustee

We want to thank each of you for taking time to vote and participate in the election process.  We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you.

Congratulations to the members of our new Board!  Each of us is excited to start in our new roles and do our very best on behalf of those with hearing loss.  A big round of applause and thank yous go to Joe Linder and Tom Garvey who have moved to other positions on the Board as well as to our outgoing Secretary Sarah Wegley.  Each of these individuals contributed a lot of personal time and effort that allowed us to keep moving forward in fulfilling our mission.

You’ve all met Joe Linder who has graciously served as President on the Board for the past 5 years.  Joe sets the agenda and leads all of our Board meetings and email discussions, writes the cover page for our quarterly newsletter, emcees the birthday and holiday parties, and frequently shares a story or two about some of his more harrowing experiences.  He actively searches out social events for our group to attend, too.  As a manager at a bank, he is very familiar with financial matters and often offers his insight into potential solutions being considered by the Board.  We imagine he will continue doing so as VP, too (smile).

You don't often hear about Tom Garvey because his work with managing our finances these past two years is primarily done behind the scenes.  But we took his advice after studying his research last year and moved some of our savings to an account bearing a much higher rate of interest and it is paying off big-time!  He also offers a lot of good suggestions and food for thought in a variety of other areas.  Thanks, Tom.  You are a valuable asset to the team!  We hope you’ll stay with us for a long time!

Special thanks to Sarah Wegley who resigned from the Board due to a new job but who made significant contributions of time and energy both on and off the Board for many years.  Her most recent was as manager of ALDA Chicago's website.  Prior to that, Sarah served as our Social Committee Chair and planned a lot of interesting and fun socials.  She even helped raise a nice share of money for the ALDAcon Scholarship fund last year and was a key partner in developing the electronic voting mechanisms for our annual Board elections.  We’ve learned a lot from her and will certainly miss her (and her smiling face)!  We hope to continue seeing her at socials.

Last but not least, we are always looking for people who are willing and able to help out even in a small way.  We have a lot of committees where you can put forth your talents and shine!  If you’d like to join our team, we’d certainly love to have you.  Just let us know.  Contact any one of us.  Our email addresses are on the ALDA Chicago website (see the Volunteer menu item).
